It may be a long-shot, but try powering the printer off, back on, then immediately try
the print job.
We've had problems with our HP 8000/8100 printers in the past running out of
PostScript interpreter memory, which then led to jobs failing at seemingly random
times.
Our solution: buy Xerox printers instead (thus our saga with the Phaser 5400).
We have not seen such problems with the 4000/4050/4100 series LaserJet products, just
the 8000/8100 series (no 8150's to work with). Firmware upgrades did not help. HP
technical support helped even less...they seemed content with the fact that we could
print once the printer was powered off.
I'm not familiar with the lineage of these printers, but I wouldn't be surprised if
the 4550 was more closely related to the 8000-series than the 4000-series (and
therefore have similar symptoms).
