The usual way to get status back on a PS connection is to send a ^T character to the printer, which will force the printer to report its status (printing, paper jam, paper out, idle, etc.). That's assuming you have a sane PostScript implementation. You can issue ^T's all you want on a Color LaserJet or LJ4500, but you won't get an answer back from any of them until the job is complete.
