all of the above. i rely 100% on pjl and postscript status, pagecount,
and error reporting for these printers. i connect to the printer via
an external jetdirect because the network interface supplied by the
manufacturer is total shit.  because of this i have no real indications
via the jetdirect's snmp agent about the status of the device, other
than the state of the control lines on the parallel port.

as a matter of fact, just this morning i noticed on of these printers
became unresponsive (ifhp complaining that it couldn't get sync with
the printer), and a user confirmed that it was simply out of toner.

when there's any error condition it appears these savins simply take
themselves offline, and by offline i mean *really* offline.
