Tony, Don, Steve,
I don't think this is a good solution in the long run. While
I can see why some lists should be open, and I can understand
that extremely sensitive information can be exchanged by private
mail or by phone, we need to have a method to exchange _and_
archive LSST information that is _not_ appropriate for the whole
world to see. The easiest and simplest solution would be to prevent
google & world to see our lsst-* lists.
Appealing as a "private" list sounds, I don't think it is practical.
Email is not a suitable medium for sensitive information. For one
thing, at some LSST institutions (including UW) email is a matter of
public record. It takes a public record request to obtain it, so I
imagine it is rarely made public, but we cannot rely on that for
privacy.
