To reply to my own post...... (goes a little red around the ears)

OK, I have narrowed it down to suspect S3 cards (and I have lots of them),
but now a new problem has cropped up.

The 14" monitor won't show 800x600, but a 17" monitor will. The problem is
that it is a school project, and I can't replace all the monitors. What are
the various config lines to test various monitor settings in the conf file,
because I know that the monitors can do up to 1024x768 in Windows mode.

Thanks
