Hmm, it works fine here.

The missing insmod log could be because we now use modprobe
instead of insmod.

Did the 3.0.1 kernel work for you ?

And, I know that it also works fine with VMware.
This is what I have setup for my vmware workstation:

[vmware]
        DNS_SERVER         = 192.168.254.20
        XSERVER            = auto
        X4_BUSID           = "PCI:0:15:0"
        X_MODE_0           = 800x600
        LOCAL_APPS         = N
        RUNLEVEL           = 5
