That worked perfectly (well almost, I then had a problem with X, but
I've delt with those before)

oh and the reason why we couldn't just install a small linux distro on
the laptop in the first place is we needed to keep the OS on there
intact. what this whole thing is for is our setup will be going to
atleast 2 confrences to demonstrate Opensource and Linux, with having
just a floppy we can just put it into any random persons laptop
(assuming the nic is supported) and it will work.
