Mike, you could take a self compiled kernel with BOOTP support compiled in, devfs support and devfs mount on boot as well. I guess that you then have to give the kernel a param like ip=bootp. If you compile in the network card driver as well, you can skip initrd but have to modify rc.local a little bit (path, dhclient). Not tested, but should work (I'm doing it the way outlined with dhcp and bpbatch resp. dhcp/lilo on double boot stations).
