I've run into a problem with Star Office 5.2: If loaded by root, with the networking switch, it isn't available to other user accounts. This is a known issue involving the sofficerc file and I'm not sure if there is a reliable resolution yet. In addition, although it imports and exports to MS Office formats fairly well there's lots of room for improvement. I need for my Linux based word processor and spreadsheet program to import and export to common Windows office suite formats and to do so for multiple users via LTSP. All this got me wondering: What do you "LTSP production environment veterans" use for word processing and spreadsheet duties in a mixed environment with Windows Office Suite products? I'm looking into Star Office 6.0 but it appears to have the same issue as 5.2. I'm also considering Open Office but don't know enough if it's "issues" yet. So, what do 'yall use and recommend for a situation like this?
