I have found that the Linux terminals can log into non-LTSP servers directly (that is, if I set the server I want them to log into as the XDMCP server in the lts.conf), but when any system but the one they boot from is selected via the chooser, I get the grey screen with the large X cursor.

What would cause a terminal to be able to log into a server directly, but not through a chooser?
At a guess the secondary machines are not quite configured right.

A more recent test found that it does seem to be the chooser, or something somehow related to it. I logged in to my own machine indirectly:
X -indirect 127.0.0.1 :1
...and the exact same thing happens, it can log into itself (the X terminals could log into the LTST server via the chooser just fine), but if I select another system, it doesn't work (and, in fact, causes that system to stop responding entirely)

Obvious temporary solution is to replace GDM, right? Well, for some reason I can't seem to get KDM's chooser to appear, and documentation on KDM utterly sucks from what I have seen. XDM refuses to display a chooser as well. I tried configuring GDM to use XDM's and KDM's chooser for kicks, but GDM (or the chooser?) simply crashes when anyone logs in.
A (very) recent changelog from KDE said something to the effect of:
Changes: Chooser
Made chooser work at all.
Well, it doesn't seem to for me still. (That was for KDE 3.04).

Why XDM doesn't work is still a mystery. Documentation seems plentiful on it, and while it does allow the terminals to log into the LTSP server fine, no chooser ever shows up. What fun. :)
