I feel that using Linux X Terminals in the Library will benefit us in the long run as
far as cost of operation is concerned.

The one limiting factor to how well LTSP can be used in a public library setting is
the status of your external database vendors' HTML compliancy.

If all of your database vendors produce browser-agnostic code, then Mozilla,
Konqueror, Phoenix or any of the other made-for-linux browsers will be able to provide
the access that your patrons need. Keep in mind though that some database vendors are
stuck in an IE or Netscape 4.x mode only and you may have troubles accessing their
products. You will either have to decide to stop providing access to those products or
start evangelizing them to get with the program...

We actually have a few vendors that are still producing code that either doesn't work
with standards-compliant browsers or they block browsers that they don't recognize
even if those browsers would work. It's a horrible situation and all libraries should
demand that their vendors produce browser-agnostic, compliant HTML. Vendors must learn
that not all of the world runs on IE.

Be aware, also, that if you plan on providing office applications to the public that
your server and network requirements will be a little higher in order to support
OpenOffice or similar office suite. OO will give you the ability to work with MSOffice
documents...

HTH,
David
