Rachel,
I am currently working on converting the public workstations in my 3rd public
library in New Jersey serving a combined total population of almost 90,000 residents.
The results are great. Only a handful of patrons even noticed that they are not using
Windows and the staff only knows that they don't have to reboot the *&%$#% things 6
times a day.

We have converted both the OPACs and the Internet Kiosks and added word processing
to the public workstations.

In one library (some photos are available at http://www.elbnet.com/fanwood ) we
used ThinkNICs, in the second we recycled their old Pentium 90 machines by popping in
a new NIC and the current project involves recycling some old HP Vectras.

On the Web site mentioned above there are also some links to materials that we
handed out at a presentation that we gave for the New Jersey Library Association,
included a cost analysis prepared by the Director of the Fanwood Library. If you email
me
off the list I'd me glad to send you the email addresses of the library directors so
you can get their perspective on Linux.

Just think: No more Fortress! :-) No more freezing, crashing, rebooting! Uptime
measured in hundreds of days!

The transition was seamless, we simply moved one machine at a time from the Windows
world to the LTSP network. We also implemented a timed session feature in the 2nd
library and Windows to Linux and Linux to Windows printing to utilize existing
equipment as much as possible.

The hardest part of all the installations was the "sale" to the Library Boards but
once the Directors were on board that was pretty straight forward. If you do decide to
go LTSP (or if you have specific questions) please feel free to contact me. I can
help with some of the "lock down" issues.

Pete
