Many, if not most, 3c509 nics are ISA. ISA nics require special setup. Unfortunately ltsp documentation re setting up ISA nics is obscure. Those of us who are recycling old technology will need to configure ISA nics. We find them built-in the mobos on major brand Pentium class boxes such as Dell.
1. Obtain the 3com nic setup utility which allows you to turn off ISA pnp. If ISA pnp is on, the nic will not work with ltsp. Try this url. <http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/3c509/3c5096.1.htm>http://suppo rt.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/3c509/3c5096.1.htm to download the utility. The utility is 3c5x9cfg.exe on disk #2. Copy disk #2 to a floppy and run in MS-DOS mode or make the floppy DOS bootable. 2. Record the nic's port address using the 3Com utility. You'll need to enter the port address in dhcpd.conf. 3. Follow the example at <http://www.ltsp.org/instructions-3.0.html>http://www.ltsp.org/instructions- 3.0.html. Search the page for "isa network" to find the instructions. Here's an example: ># file /etc/dhcpd.conf >... > > host xxx1 { > hardware ethernet xxxxxxxxxxxx; >... > option option-128 e44574680000; > option option-129 "NIC=3c509; The syntax above is correct. Just make sure the 3c509 is not in PnP mode. You can set its parameters using the 3com utility 3c5x9cfg.exe.
