Another possibility is (but I had no chance to test it): Edit /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/passwd on the server and remove the "x" from the "root:x:......" line. Most probably you cannot get it to run without yp/nis. As I told you, www.tldp.org is your friends if you need a howto, well, the "ypdomainname" command has a manpage which could you help setting up your linux server.
