Hi Wouter,

If you're planning to add more classrooms, look into either Knoppix or Openmosix with LTSP. By building a cluster & having additional servers you can greatly improve the performance of the system, run more complex applications and keep your costs low .. :-)

good luck
Norbert

Thanks to all of you who replied with their remarks on this
subject. Meanwhile our school has bought the beast,
because IMHO it can't be but an improvement over the PIII
MMX with 768 Mb and 4Gb HD that I am using now to serve
LTSP to about 20 terminals. Especially since we are
planning to connect 3 more classrooms to it with 20
terminals each.

Thanks again,
Wouter

Hi all,

I've got an opportunity to buy a second hand Compaq
Proliant 5500 server. It has dual PIII XEON/500MHz
processors, 1.2 Gb RAM, 3x18 Gb HDUs and a SCSI Ultra
Wide 2. Yet, it "only" costs about US$1500.00

IMHO that would be a great replacement for my current
LTSP server. I wonder however if Linux can currently
handle all the goodies which are inside that box.
Especially the dual processors and the chipsets on the
motherboard.

Opinions anyone ?
