Okay so no one wishes to help me with this, fair enough. Could some one
point me at another Linux group that may give me a clue or some reading
that may help, please.

The only tool I am aware of for what looks like file related problems is
fsck. If I attempt to run fsck as suggested by my Linux book, I get dire
warnings about running fsck on a working system will make a mess of it and
so I chicken out.

Still utterly stumped.
