With old, small, non-DDC monitors I get more mileage by specifying the
horizontal scan rate rather than the resolution.
X_HORZSYNC = 30-55
X_VERTREFRESH = 55-85
It gives you finer control without going for Jim's solution of the full
modeline. You can tweak it gradually, and find where it 'breaks'.
