Bryn, Are you trying to connect to the correct $DISPLAY? :0.0 is the "local" display (the display running on the machine where you are executing the command) which in this case, is the server.
You probably want to connect to ws001:0.0 or ws001.domainname.foo:0.0. You can find the correct syntax by booting the workstation in run level 3 and see what $DISPLAY is set to.
