Dear Folks,
turns out I was a dog that saw a cat, but went barking up the
wrong tree. The delay in printing has nothing to do with LTSP or Linux in
general. It is introduced by the HP JetDirect printer program used by the
spooler on my business system. This program asks the device "what kind of
HP equipment are you" and waits 3 seconds for response. This behavior can
not be changed, since I don't have neither the source nor time to mess
with it. Rats!
Thank you for all the help, and thank you Jim for being nice about
shielding me from etheral GUI - you were right, I hate it and use
tethereal exclusively. julius
