Ragnar, could you use a Linux box with Samba for the file sharing? That way you could use NFS (which supports symlinks) for KDE and SMB for the Windows clients.

No, the sysadmins want their w2k boxen. So we need to find some way to get them to talk. smbfs har undergone some development and the patches are in the latest kernels. We'll see. If we make it work, the result will be GPL.
