If you boot into a terminal where SCREEN_01=shell, and at the command
line run:

scanimage -L

you should get something like:

device 'hp:libusb:001:003' is a Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 63x0C flatbed
scanner

If you don't get that on the terminal, SANE is not recognizing the
scanner. If you get a positive response on the terminal shell, start the
X server (startx), open an X terminal and do another scanimage -L, and
you should get something like:

device `net:john:hp:libusb:001:003' is a Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 63x0C
flatbed scanner

By the way, in lts.conf, for 4.2, I took out all the references to
MODULE_XX= usb*, scanner, etc. and RC_FILE_XX=xinetd. So the _only_
thing that starts and connects my scanner is the XINETD_SERVICES="saned"
line.

The following is part of the Troubleshooting section of an earlier LTSP
scanner README:

-----
TROUBLESHOOTING:
If you did everything right and you have xsane installed on the server
just run xsane or xscanimage and you should be able to scan away.

The number one problem when running xsane on a host will be a no sane
devices found error. This can be due to a number of things.

Check your /var/log/messages file on the server when a user connects
to the saned daemon through xinetd.
You should get something like this
Oct 2 17:43:22 ws001 saned[249]: access by [EMAIL PROTECTED] accepted
Oct 2 17:43:30 ws001 saned[249]: exiting

If it gives the above message and you still cant connect, there may be
a problem with the device node you are using.

If it says access by user [EMAIL PROTECTED] rejected, then either the
/opt/ltsp/i386/etc/sane.d/saned.conf file is restricting you (add a + ),
the /etc/sane.d/net.conf file on the server has the wrong hostname,
the hosts file on the workstation doesn't have an entry for the machine
your accessing from or you simply don't have the scanner set up correctly.

Hope that helps,

John
