Just after GDM 2.20.2 was released, I submitted a patch that may help with the GDM XDMCP problem. > we didnt use GDM since two years in LTSP ... > even though you can forcefully enable XDMCP. using ldm with the > LDM_DIRECTX variable set operates at the same speed as XDMCP (actually > there is no difference at all for the X forwarding) but adds password > security. > > note also that none of the features we develop are having any focus on > XDMCP anymore since two years... i.e. neither sound nor local devcies > will work out of the box without the ldm ssh tunnel available for the > backend communication the different features use (i.e. we abuse it as > networked dbus replacement)... I assume a lot of LTSP admins, especially non-Ubuntu admins such as myself, still use LTSP 4.2 with GDM or KDM. I haven't had the opportunity to try LTSP 5, but it looks very interesting. When you say there is no speed difference, do you mean just for light use? What about heavier use such as fast scrolling, web animations, small videos, etc? Does LDM support automatic timed logins? For example, I have station054 login with user account guest054, but station055 has no automatic timed login.
