Are you really using the i386 version? Because that's the 32-bit version, which is known to cause slowness and other issues on systems with lots of RAM (3+ GB). Install Ubuntu x86_64 and try again. If you insist on running a 32-bit server then you should consider dropping to 3 GB of RAM or install the server kernel, which is configured to use more RAM, although less effectively than a 64-bit OS, and with potential hardware support issues.
