3) Java sometimes takes 100% CPU
4) FireFox crashes more often than I would like
5) It sometimes works fine for 10 minutes or so but grinds to a halt

Has anyone worked around these sort of issue? Should I simply move up to 8.10?

Also, when I used K12LTSP in the past, I believe some applications
were automatically "niced" to avoid issues like this. Has anyone done
that with Ubuntu?

Installing nspluginwrapper seemed to help with firefox crashing. Now if the flash plugin crashes we just get a gray box instead of having it take down the browser.

I wrote a script to watch for programs hogging the cpu and then throttle them using cpulimit. Could probably renice them instead, but this seems to work. I installed cpulimit, then edited rc.local to start this attached cpu_governor script. Any comments welcome.
