It's certainly possible, but more difficult. As GNU/Linux distributions move
towards more autoconf (i.e. configless xorg, DBus, udev/hal, etc.) making
"fast" manual overrides becomes more and more hackish. Certainly, handcrafting
a minimal set of udev rules for your hardware, and specifying an Xorg conf file
and disabling X autoconf are available to you. Please consult the upstream
docs.
