IMHO you should be using an xterm for your interface. Thats rude and cruel but 
it really is the best advice given the nature of your question and the 
technical details to do otherwise. 
Use a lightweight window manager eg icewm or even fvwm.

You would need to decide on telnet or ssh, and lots of gritty detail and if 
ever you have a problem you are on your own because you are doing non-standard 
stuff.
