You mean it did change something, it turned off the screen (presumably
because the timings were too high) instead of giving you 800x600, right?

So your monitor supports 1024x768 but at what vertical refresh rate?
43i? 60 Hz? 85 Hz?

Boot the client with the following in lts.conf:
SCREEN_02=shell
SCREEN_07=ldm
Then press Alt+Ctrl+F2 to switch to the console. There, type the
following command:

eval $(tr '\0' '\n' < /proc/$(pidof ldm)/environ | egrep '^DISPLAY=|
^XAUTHORITY=') && export DISPLAY XAUTHORITY

Then you'll have access to the X-Windows and you'll be able to use the
xrandr command to see or modify your resolution, e.g.:
$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 175, current 1280 x 800, maximum 1280 x 800
default connected 1280x800+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   1280x800       50.0*
   1024x768       51.0     52.0
   800x600        55.0     56.0     57.0     58.0     59.0

$ xrandr --output default --mode 800x600
(sets 800x600 resolution)

To see if the resolution you set works, press Alt+Ctrl+F7.
Once you have found out the correct resolution, just put it in lts.conf.
See also the xrandr man page if you need help with its command line.
