The output of xrandr means that 1024x...@60hz is the selected resolution
but it's not supported by your monitor.
You could force 1024x...@43hz (the second column in the 1024x768 row) by
setting X_VERTREFRESH=40-58, but that's interlaced, meaning it'll be
very flickery and bad for your eyes.

So on that monitor I'd go for 800x600.

I assume you're not having driver/KMS problems since you said that by
plugging in another monitor you can properly see X.
