I spoke too soon.  After updating my Oneiric system a few days later, 
the old behavior appeared.

It is curious that the terms "unity-2d" and "ubuntu-2d" are both used.  
Perhaps some functions will accept one or the other term, but not both.  
And then LDM_SESSION is not honored.
