Thanks to all who posted on this topic.
At least one of my old network adapters apparently does not sense the
direct cable connection over a straight-through cable and provide
auto-correction.
I should have thought of it myself, but yes, a cross-over cable does
solve the problem.
Concerning a couple of the other thoughts: It is not a question of DIY
cables vs. commercial cables, and not a question of cold boot or not. I
already checked out those possibilities.
