Thanks for that caution. In the several dozen times that I have booted up the client (actually swapping in several machines as the sole client), I have one time gotten a message that the server failed to respond in the middle of the boot. So perhaps that explains it.

But it worked fine at the next boot attempt.

So for this non-critical little setup, the cross-over cable has been a good solution.
