Hi Taco, I also do not know the answer of those two questions but I can ask Behdad Esfahbod and Rouzbeh Pournader to join the luatex mailing list and discuss these with you. Behdad and Rouzbeh were involved with Fribidi and know a lot about unicode bidi.
