Not a big deal when there is only one person on the system being backed up (my desktop), and only two people using the line each visiting mostly different sites :)

I do usually bring up a proxy for LAN parties though.

Why not purge the cache and rely on Squid for caching?  Also set the
individual browser caches to be smaller.  That allows your per-user
quotas to be smaller, while reducing redundancy on browser caching.  The
Squid cache will take care of caching for all clients, saving on
bandwidth too.
