Hi,
It's great that we are thinking of offering a better experience to XP
users, but let us not forget about the millions of small and medium
sized businesses out there who will want to 'carry on as they are' with
minimal cost in terms of hard / soft ware, and minimal retraining of
their staff. Take my old company as an example employing 15 - 20 people
on one site, have used XP since it's inception and is now being told by
MS that they need to upgrade their six or seven machines to make them
Win7 compliant. If we can offer something that enables them to carry on
without that expense in these difficult times I am sure that would be a
persuasive argument!
Note that to this end I am in the process of clearing out my old netbook
(1200 cpu 1.5gb ram 40gb HDD) to put a clean Lubuntu install on it for a
meeting with my old boss on Thursday to show him how good it is and and
a very reasonable outlay of nothing for either hard or software,
possibly (even hopefully) a few hundred pounds to me for the
installation of Lubuntu on their machines but that is secondary to
getting the message out there.
I have no worries over the 'office' functions (email, spreadsheets,
presentations etc).
The bit that concerns me is the CNC bit along with the software to 'port
the specs' to the CNC machine as their specs often come from third party
places who will quite possibly still be using windoze.
I have not had enough experience of Ubuntu CNC to say for certain that
there will not be any errors in then putting those files onto a *ubuntu
box, and as that *is* their business they cannot afford any hassle
however small and the transition *must* be seamless, as any hassle will
have a negative impact on their business and they will end up going out
and getting Win7 just for compatibility with their customers.
If anyone has any thoughts on this please let me know ! Although I no
longer work for them I still have a good relationship with the owners,
and do not wish that to change as I cost them time / money or worst of
all a customer!
