Sure it's better have a winXP machine offline if you must use proprietary software. I see many Oxy-fuel welding and cutting machine still working with W98! That's not so strange, believe me. But again, the proprietary software of a control machine is made to force the customer to stay with a particular company/brand. Because updates are sold at astronomical prices. It's just a business. At the end the instructions you find on CNC programs send via RS232 are always the same: starting x, y coordinates - intensity and type of the shot/cut or other operation - move to the other x, y. This is repeated until the end of file. It's not so simpe but it will gave you an idea of what I'm talking about. So there is a good possibility of migrating to linux, preferably with the help of a specialist or a good community.
