Eric & Israel:

Come to think of it, the Eclipse icon (it's an Integrated Development Environment for Java) on my desktop looks a little strange, as if it's been cropped from what it might have been before.

The resulting (cropped?) icon is normal size in other contexts, and is the same size as other icons on my (Lubuntu 13.10) desktop.

tl;dr;
changing the desktop file from
Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/icon.xpm
to
Icon=icon
fixes the issue altogether.

Someone commented that it affected Xubuntu 12.10 & 13.10 as well.

Great find Eric!!

Found yet another bug report dealing specifically with an .xpm icon being huge - this with an app called Eclipse. This is not one I listed. I think this got fixed. Eclipse is in (with a different icon than I see in the first screenshot attached) LSC, so I must have installed it. Anyway, this bug affected 96 people and has detailed info on (possibly) the "root" problem(s) of .xpm icons starting in Ubuntu 12.10. Please check out all the comments to see if there is as much insight as I think there is (going grocery shopping - gotta' go)
