So if you use 3 channels (3 x 9600 = 28800) you pay 3 x the airtime?

Well if your phone is HSCSD enabled such as most of the latest Nokias, you
simply request for the service to be turned on your line and voila you have
it.
I have tested and verified it with 6310, 6310i,7210,7250,3650,6600 models of
Nokia and others have used it on the SONY Ericsson phones as well.

Actually I use it along with Bluetooth on the laptop though you could connect
the phone via a cable or infra-red and it works either way. Just that
Bluetooth allows me to keep my phone in the pocket while I dialup.

My miserable understanding of GSM tells me that it simply combines multiple
9.6kbps channels into one to give you those speeds. I can give you a demo to
prove it if you are still in doubt.

This was a common service in the Uk and other European countries before the
advent of GPRS though some providers like Orange still have it.

Semat get real !!! 28.8 Kbps is available? Please explain the circumstances under which it works. It just might as well be a solution to a pressing consultancy am working on. I was actually thinking of switching to Mango's CDMA.

Mark on this point I agree with you. It took me joining MTn

as staff

to learn that they had HSCSD ( High Speed Circuit Switched

Data) and

that I could dialup with my phone and get speeds of up to 28.8 kbps.

Up to now when I mention this to the more technically

minded people I

know, they are surprised and wonder why nobody ever

mentioned this to

them.

very true. on UTL's side however, there's a service they

has it too,

i presume :)

If you don't tell customers about it, they won't use it. It's not enough just to have that piece of technology enabled somewhere in your data centre. The other provider that sets it up, and tells customers about it, will get better mileage.
