At what point that the system hang. What is the last message displayed
on the screen. The vmlinux you extracted to your FAT partition.

I think the reason why it boots straight into windoze is because you
didnt install a bootloader (LILO or Grub) to the MBR when you installed
it. If you have a linux floppy you could do this but you would have to
manually add the windoze boot option in /etc/lilo.conf
