If some company started to sell linux computers and setup a fancy GUI
 that was user friendly, locked away the powerful system commands,
and wrote some end user software and started selling their computers.

most linux distros are doing exactly this.

but wait, you have to buy their hardware in order to use their OS
even though the base of the OS is designed to run on various types of
hardware and systems, and their hardware is nothing special that
can't be bought off the shelf. That is why i am happy with the GPL.
it prevents this from happening.

so,

a. is there anything wrong with that business model?
b. what exactly is your point?
