in the MTA (Mail Transfer Agent: a program that transfers e-mail in or out
of a system, most often using SMTP) logs if mail has been sent, if not then
he will see some error in the MTA logs. It might not even be an issue with
the firewall but its worth checking what is in the MTA logs first.
