I wondered at this.. on one of the tests we did, opendns worked well.

No, Orange doe snot require you to set up your DNS manually. This has only
been seen with Ubuntu, Fedora and some Redhat versions. I have tested this
on UNIX systems and it picks up the DNS settings correctly. I don't know
why, but I have seen and heard of the above three randomly assigning DNS IP
addresses. The ranges we have seen so far are 2.2.2.2, 10.11.12.13, 4.4.4.4
and strangly, 193.0.0.1 (which if I am not wrong, is a RIPE address).

SuSE Linux, Mac, Windows and the UNIX flavours we have tested all receive
the correct DNS settings.
