Frankly having used many of those backup systems I have to say that at the enterprise level, Veritas ( Now Symantec) Netbackup is still the top of the range by far. I have used NetApps products on their storage and they are quite impressive but work even better when coupled with netbackup.

In the olden days I used to use amanda, and bacula as free open source products. They are quite versatile if your skill level is high enough to set them up properly.

Stephen,

In our office we use Retrospect from EMC (http://retrospect.com/), it has connectors into different databases, mail and mail and file servers and I think they recently added an agent for VMWare. It can backup to HDD, tape
and optical media. You also have options for scheduling, and full or
incremental backups
