If you start him on Windows he's only going to get a virus and be asking you for help inside a week. Ubuntu is very easy for beginners, I totally agree with Reinier start him on the good stuff now. If he really need Windows, run it in a VM or Virtualbox inside the machine, that way if and when it goes titsup you still can work.
