Maybe its just me ... but which toes did CFI step on to warrant this?
I agree some of their fees are steep (like I think if you pay for a domain then you should not be charged separately to access the management interface for the domain ... and double the domain fees at that!). But the domain prices are in line with what is charged in the US (about $30 per annum). IN the US once you buy a domain you get to manage it immediately at no extra fee. But then UCC could tell them to remove or lower some tarrifs. I have not had a problem with CFI and my domains ....... in fact I have had more problems moving a domain from one ISP to another. Maybe someone thought there was too much money going to one company..... The reasons given in the document are i. Registration and renewal is too expensive ii. Appears to be monopolised by a single agent iii. Since it is a national resource, it should not be managed privately unless under outsourcing arrangements reason iii. Is a stupid statement. Then we should never have invited MTN, Airtel/Celtel, Warid and other telecomms companies to come and compete with UTL. UTL was in charge of all telecomms in Uganda so why did we let other private companies come and manage a "National resource"? Or why have we invited Tullow, The Italians and Chinese to manage oil? reason ii. is not a reason .... We effectively have one company for CEMENT in Uganda, we have just sold the railway to ONE company, RVR which is private .... we have one UMEME (private) ..... these are MUCH bigger companies with much greater strangle holds on the country than domain names ... I am sure there are more examples of single product companies in Uganda but I am too lazy to research. At the beginning of the document it states " The number of registrations of Internet domain names in a country is also a measure of its popularity in the Internet space." This was the most laughable statement .... according to this statement .... Tuvalu the island nation with the .tv domain is then the most wired and internet savy nation in the world!. Yet all Tuvalu did was sell .tv to Verisign! If we gave away .ug domain names for free would that put internet into every school in Uganda? I remember the last ICT minister was trying to take over the over head fiber optic lines owned by UMEME and being used by the telecoms companies under similar reasoning. Anyway I would love to have a drink with the CFI folks and ask them to kiss and tell ....
