I would not venture into reinventing the wheel by doing new scripts
to manipulate CDRs.

Lots of options. Start Simple:
There's FreePBX, the 'de-facto' asterisk GUI. It has a 'reports'
page gives you ALL this info. You can install FreePBX over existing
asterisk server in production.

If it's a fresh start, go Elastix. It's superb and you'll love it.
