This can be caused by several things, are u switching operating systems btn 
local computer and web server

  How did you upload the files? Check if you uploaded the php files in
    binary mode. The char-set settings on your server could be different
    to the one your computer.

    To exclude if the upload didn't alter any files do a quick test.
    Extract the original Joomla zip file into a temp folder directly on
    the server and make a diff of a standard file such as footer.php.
    Assuming that you have shell access?

            in the configuration.php i think there is a setting for the
            URL of the 

            website. On your laptop that probably read 
http://localhost/mywebsite when you 

            upload, you need to rewrite it to the full path of your
            public website.

            

            (there are a few other settings that might do this as well,
            like the /tmp
