I've had to personally brush with this debate - when IHSU asked me to
implement a computer skills course.

Majority of Class? Undergrads, and Certificate Holders

Primary Goals - Hear to study Nursing, Public Health and other health
Sciences

I've had to ask myself what I wanted them to remember after a semester
worth of "computer skills" and i found myself drifting more towards ICT as
a whole.

Give them enough skill to know what to do when they get to a computer, to
know who to use the current powerful ICT tools.

So go away from traditional send/receive email and teach email and online
collaboration.
Chat and IM needs to transform into Social & Professional Networking.
ICT stops to be all about computers and becomes what it should be - ALL and
EVERYTHING about INFORMATION and COMMUNICATION technologies.

I suppose this approach would be far different if you were at CIC at MUK
and your class' primary goal was to become a computer scientist.

Its so hard, because people assume your computer skill to mean ICT
expertise, which i have found to be grossly misinterpreted.
