Hello,

In my view, ICT mainly emphasizes specific technologies - Like PHP, Visual
Basic, HTML, Cisco even. Computer Science is mainly the mathematical theory
behind computers - Data Structures, algorithms, Complexity, Finite State
Machines and the like. They are both relevant, but I think we should put
more emphasis on Computer Science, especially on teaching the Students
studying CS themselves why they are studying it. Now I don't know lots about
ICT, but that's my biased assessment.

The problem is, at MAK, Computer Science students are not really taught what
Computer Science is about. They teach programming just like they teach it to
the ICT class, and don't stress the usefulness of (efficient?) data
structures and Algorithms. Case in point: we studied Java based on Learn
Java in 21 days and implemented a basic calculator in the end.

I'd expect some differences, e.g. from shared course units, like DBMS
(Database Management Systems) - ICT students should be required to implement
and use MySQL/Oracle/. whereas CS students are required to implement a
simple DBMS from efficient data structures.

I'm not sure though, since I haven't studied ICT, or read through their
curriculum, but I've helped a couple of students do their course work.

Regards,

Daniel.

Hello LUG

I think CS should be integrated with Telecom Eng because TE has Core
computer evolution theory and practical that's detailed Microprocessor and
electronics which at the same time falls partly in CS and ICT manages both
TE and CS.

ICT is not all about PowerPoint , excel and Mails as u guys can imagine. Its
broad and wide.

Regards.

None of us is as smart as all of us

ICT is more application based. i.e. Powerpoint, Excel, Access where are CS
is more about the 'science' so how theory of Computers etc.

The main problem is one of qualified teachers. In the UK a lot of ICT
teachers do not have a CS based degree, not a problem when you teaching MS
Access a problem when you want to teach about ROM's RAM, CPU's etc.

As a thought because of the more theoretical nature of CS though you
probably can teach more offline, than ICT.

Also and I have to agree with this CS is more exciting than ICT, as you
learn how and why computers work, not just click next, so kids end up more
engaged and likely to have a CS based career.
