That Averge Joe doesn't get the trick the smart phone vendors are playing might have some truth, particularly in developed markets where networks are essentially clamouring over you to give you a contract. But in the developing world, after some time, I expect that users will catch on. Unfortunately, the developing world that does not support vendor-network partnerships on a large scale are of little interest to the vendors :-(. So they don't really care. That's life. Mark.
