My friend,

Except for software development in windows, I can assure you that everything
is better in Linux.
It is also free. There is more choice. I only have a bias for software
because I am a Microsoft developer.
What you want to do is get an Ubuntu bootable cd/dvd and dip your toe in. I
think you will like it and the variety
of alternatives. Do not be afraid to come here for Linux related questions.

Lastly, to use windows apps you need to be a bit of a windows expert and
Linux expert to use wine or you need to
pay for another emulator like <code>weaver (I forget the name). However,
BEFORE your insist on dirtying a linux
install with windows apps first ENSURE there is not a better Linux
equivalent out there.

Good Luck
