My friend, Except for software development in windows, I can assure you that everything is better in Linux. It is also free. There is more choice. I only have a bias for software because I am a Microsoft developer. What you want to do is get an Ubuntu bootable cd/dvd and dip your toe in. I think you will like it and the variety of alternatives. Do not be afraid to come here for Linux related questions.
Lastly, to use windows apps you need to be a bit of a windows expert and Linux expert to use wine or you need to pay for another emulator like <code>weaver (I forget the name). However, BEFORE your insist on dirtying a linux install with windows apps first ENSURE there is not a better Linux equivalent out there.
